Just four months ago, Twitter announced it was upping the 6-second limit for Vines to 140 seconds. Well, soon that limit will be zero.
Today, Twitter announced that the Vine app will be discontinued in the “coming months.” However, you’ll still be able to continue accessing and downloading your Vines.
The website – and all the Vines that have been uploaded – will continue to live on for now, according to the announcement. The team said that users will be notified through the app when things begin to change.
“We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made,” according to the announcement.
Twitter bought Vine for $30 million in 2012. After launching in 2013, Vine became quite popular and known for its looping 6-second videos. At last count, Vine had approximately 200 million monthly active users, according to The Motley Fool.
Vine’s marketing potential got a lot of attention throughout its first year. But seemingly, it has fallen victim to the “shiny new object syndrome” that many tech companies eventually all face. Users and several brands, have moved onto other video platforms, especially Instagram video, which also launched in 2013.
Vine wasn’t the only casualty at Twitter, however. The company, which is struggling to add new users and bring in more revenue, announced it was laying off 350 people (about 9 percent of its workforce).
R.I.P. Vine.
