China's tightens grip on Internet, but some censorship circumvention tools still available

China-wall

In the last 10 days, China has been tightening its grip on the Internet, blocking several tools that allow users inside the country to escape and circumvent what's popularly known as the "Great Firewall of China."

Some popular Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, were the latest victims of the sophisticated Chinese Internet censorship system, with several individuals and small businesses reportedly unable to use them in the last few days to connect to censored websites, or to use other blocked services like Gmail, Flickr or Twitter

But not all hope is lost for Chinese users trying to get around the Great Firewall. Read more...

Carl Djerassi, father of the birth control pill, dies at 91

Ap184409287345

SAN FRANCISCO — Carl Djerassi, the chemist widely considered the father of the birth control pill, has died.

Djerrasi died of complications of cancer Friday in his San Francisco home, Stanford University spokesman Dan Stober said. He was 91.

Djerassi, a professor emeritus of chemistry at Stanford, was most famous for leading a research team in Mexico City that in 1951 developed norethindrone, a synthetic molecule that became a key component of the first birth control pill.

"The pill" as it came to be known radically transformed sexual practices and women's lives. The pill gave women more control over their fertility than they had ever had before and permanently put doctors — who previously didn't see contraceptives as part of their job — in the birth control picture. East Coast prepares for another massive snow blast on Groundhog Day

Snow9087

The great blizzard of 2015 turned out to be a bust for New York City, but just as East Coast residents begin to let their collective weather guard down, a new storm is predicted to dump large amounts of snow on the region Sunday into Monday

But after inaccurate predictions of 2 to 3 feet of snow in New York last week, weather forecasters appear to be chastened, offering far less dire predictions regarding travel conditions, and striking far more conservative tones when mentioning potential snow totals

Despite last week's miscalculations, however, this new storm is very real and, according to AccuWeather, is predicted to bring up to a foot of snow to Chicago, Cleveland, Massachusetts and the New York City area by Monday, coinciding with Groundhog Day. Read more...

Fast food history: McDonald's opening day in Russia 25 years ago

Mcdonalds3_thumb

Twenty-five years ago, Russians finally got to have it their way

McDonald's set up its iconic golden arches in the then-Soviet Union on Jan. 31, 1990, opening its doors to hundreds of patrons excited for their first taste of Big Macs and Happy Meals. The chain's first Soviet restaurant opened on Moscow's Pushkin Square — reportedly the world's busiest — which was recently closed temporarily following state-regulator inspections

While McDonald's truly had a grand welcoming in 1990, it's a different scene today. The company is opening just 50 restaurants this year — compared to 73 last year — due to a fall in the Russian ruble, according to Reuters. Read more...

Planet Earth In Infrared, At 4k Resolution

Planet Earth In Infrared, At 4k Resolution

Here's something you don't see every day: An ultra-HD time-lapse of Earth, as seen in infrared.

James Tyrwhitt-Drake is perhaps best known for his stunning microscopy work (this matryoshka-like GIF of a scanning electron microscope zooming in on an amphipod, a diatom, and, finally, a microscopic bacterium is a favorite of mine), but the University of Victoria student has been known to turn his attention on larger subjects. Last year, he created a beautiful ultra-HD view of Earth as imaged by Elektro-L, the first Russian weather satellite to operate in geostationary orbit; and, before that, a transfixing 4k time-lapse of the sun.

His latest creation combines hundreds of infrared images of Earth acquired by GOES-13 and GOES-15 (two geostationary NOAA/NASA weather satellites, positioned at longitudes 75° West and 135° West, respectively) acquired over a two-month period. As Tyrwhitt-Drake explains:

Heat is radiated from Earth's surface as infrared light, which is in visible to the human eye. In these images, brightness indicates the emission of infrared light into space. Infrared light is absorbed by water vapor and clouds; they appear dark and reveal the fluid motion of Earth's atmosphere.

...700 frames with a resolution of 3600x3000 were downloaded from each satellite over a period from November 30th, 2014, to January 26th, 2015. The frames were processed to remove image artifacts, played at 7fps and interpolated by a factor of four. The resulting animation plays at a speed of 21 hours/second.

Beautiful! The animations at the top and bottom of this post were created from the time-lapse that combines images acquired by GOES-13. The video, by comparison, synchronizes the images from both satellites. See both videos – as well as a third, which provides a close-up view of the northern and southern hemispheres – on Tyrwhitt-Drake's YouTube channel.
