Last year was the United Kingdom's warmest year on record since at least 1910, according to figures released by the UK Met Office.
The Met Office said the country's average temperature of 9.9 degrees Celsius, or 49.8 degrees Fahrenheit, in 2014 was its highest since comprehensive records began in 1910. It was also 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than the country's long-term average between 1981 and 2010. Last year's average temperature was also the highest on record in the Central England Temperature series, which spans back to 1659.
The new figures mean that eight of the UK's top 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2002, according to the Met Office. The previous record was set in 2006 when temperatures averaged 9.7 degrees Celsius, or 49.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Read more...
